Generation Lost

Generation Lost
by Greg Liakopoulos

Premiere March 28th 2024, National Theater of Greece

Who are the Millennials? Are they a self-centred or a lost generation?

Those born between 1981-1996 are the first post-war generation to be poorer than their parents. They have not experienced war, occupation or exile, but they have seen their hopes dashed and have been driven to existential disillusionment, convinced that things can only get worse.

They spent their youth learning foreign languages and amassing qualifications, only to see them rendered useless in the midst of the worst economic crisis in fifty years. They are a generation trapped in adolescence, perpetual teens who will forever feel like foreigners in the adult world.

Generation Lost is a melancholy requiem, albeit full of humour, for a cohort and its idols. It is a play that refuses to focus on individual protagonists and presents a plurality of voices and experiences, combining fact and fiction to present Generation Y in all its complexity and diversity.

A production for all those who belong to this generation, but also for those who identify with its dreams and disappointments. A production for all adolescents trapped in adult bodies.

The play is based on research and interviews in six European cities and was written as part of the Goethe Institut's New Stages Southeast project. It was shortlisted as one of the five best works resulting from the project at the New Stages Southeast Festival in Oberhausen, Germany. After its premiere at the National Theatre of Greece, the play will be performed at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
